cultural diversity is crucial
However, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals can best be achieved by drawing upon the creative potential of the world’s diverse cultures, and engaging in continuous dialogue to ensure that all members of society benefit from sustainable development.
Moreover, cultural diversity is crucial for sustainable development will contribute to the prevention of conflict, building of peace and development. The indirect benefits of culture are accrued through the culturally-informed and effective implementations of the SDGs.
The importance of culture in the development context had been anchored for the first time in 2001, stating that the need to “enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence” has to be recognized (UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity).
In 2015, the Resolution (on the report of the Second Committee (A/57/531/Add.3)] 57/249. Culture and development) was adopted, which underlines i.a. the following qualities:
҈ Tolerance and respect for cultural diversity and universal promotion and protection of human rights, including the right to development, are mutually supportive and promote inter alia the empowerment of women.
҈ The potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence needs to be enhanced.
҈ Public awareness of the value and importance of cultural diversity needs to be raised, and the knowledge of the positive value of cultural diversity, inter alia, as regards languages has to be encouraged.
The UN Resolution 2347 S/RES/2347 (2017), the first-ever resolution to focus on cultural heritage, condemns the unlawful destruction of cultural heritage and expresses the need of protecting and carefully managing cultural heritage and creativity.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) acts as the platform to promote greater awareness of the crucial relationship between culture and development and the important role of information and communication technologies.
